Historic Site Management Grants are offered in the 2010 Grant Round.  Applications for funding are due September 16, 2010. Visit the Current Grant Round Schedule for more information about the grant round deadlines and applicant workshop.

Eligible Applicants

  • Agencies or entities of state, county or municipal government; or
  • Nonprofit organizations that are certified tax-exempt and comply with New Jersey charity registration laws

Eligible Properties

  • are listed in the New Jersey or National Register of Historic Places;
  • contribute to the significance of a historic district listed in the New Jersey or National Register of Historic Places; or
  • are certified as eligible for listing by the Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer.

Ownership

Applicants must have permission of the owner to apply and to conduct the study or examination at the time of application.

Eligible Activities

  • Non-construction activities related directly to planning for the preservation, restoration or rehabilitation of a historic property, including: Feasibility studies; Existing conditions documentation; Planning for compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act; Analysis of existing building systems (e.g. heating, electrical, security) and providing recommendations for improvement; Maintenance plans;
  • Nominations to the New Jersey and/or National Register of Historic Places;
  • Heritage tourism programming plans and assessments;
  • Master or strategic plans;
  • Fund-raising or marketing plans for initiating capital campaigns for restoration/rehabilitation work;
  • Endowment planning and proposals;
  • Development of interpretive or curriculum materials, interpretive signage or directional signs or plaques; and
  • The development of visual media or other devices to help the disabled visitor.

Requirement for Matching Funds

Historic Site Managment Grant requests may range from $5,000 to $50,000.  The applicant must provide at least $1 in matching funds for every $3 of grant money requested.

Criteria for Funding

The following criteria will be used to evaluate and rank applications for these grant funds:
  • Historical significance of the resource;
  • Physical condition of the property;
  • Ability of the applicant to match the funds requested;
  • Ability of the applicant to complete the proposed work;
  • Potential of the project to foster preservation of the historic property; to promote other preservation activity or related cultural or economic activity; and to foster appropriate site management practices that sustain the long-term use of a property;
  • Appropriateness of project to meet the needs of the resource and quality of the work proposed for funding;
  • Degree to which the project represents innovative design or programming and reaches new audiences; and
  • Degree to which the project contributes toward a balanced distribution of program funds.
