One of the key needs recognized by the NJ Heritage Tourism plan was to "support the development of heritage tourism by linking sites and educating historic site stewards about the heritage tourism industry." In 2012, the NJ Historic Trust launched the Discover NJ History License Plate Fund for Heritage Tourism, which provides small grants (up to $5,000) to develop and promote visitor ready sites as heritage tourism destinations.
These technical assistance grants may be used to:
- promote interpretation, marketing and promotional links among heritage sites
- assess visitor-readiness of a heritage site or sites
- establish performance evaluation systems
- provide training initiatives, workshops and educational activities that foster the goals and objectives of the NJ Heritage Tourism Plan
Eligible applicants are agencies or entities of state, county or municipal government and nonprofit organizations that are 501(c)3.
