Delaware Inn

Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Historic Site Managment Grant
Grant Award: $50,000 (2006)
Grant Recipient: Port of Trenton Museum Foundation
County: Mercer
Municipality: Trenton

The Delaware Inn was constructed during the late 1790s and has been a landmark of the Lamberton neighborhood of Trenton ever since. During the nineteenth century, the building served as a tavern and hub of civic activity for the area. The People’s Brewing Company, maker of Champale, later used the building as part of its complex. The building is currently vacant and was significantly vandalized by a former tenant. The exterior is in fair condition, the interior is in extremely poor condition. The City of Trenton has stabilized and mothballed the building awaiting rehabilitation.

The grant helped fund a structural analysis, preservation plan, National Register nomination, and schematic designs. The schematic designs will look at how the building can be adapted to accommodate offices, a café, community meeting space, and exhibit space.
