Fisk Chapel was named for a Civil War veteran that provided the land and building to the AME Bethel congregation in an area of Fair Haven that was settled by a free black population. Additionally, the chapel is associated with the Fair Haven Ruling, a NJ law that required boards of education to provide equal access to public education for all children, resulting in separate but equal schools. Structural problems resulted in 1974 when the church opted to build a new structure and the municipality moved the former church to its current location.

The Trust grant helped fund structural stabilization and some exterior restoration of Fisk Chapel, including the painting of the clapboard and trim in historically appropriate colors. The borough plans to rehabilitate the interior and make the building available for community meetings, events and concerts.
