Gardens at Bamboo Brook
Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Capital Preservation Grant Level II
Grant Award:
$750,000 (2002)
Grant Recipient:
Morris County Park Commission

The gardens at Bamboo Brook are believed to be the last remaining examples of Martha Brookes' work. She is one of the few female landscape architects who trained and worked in the early 20th century. Once a private estate called Merchiston Farm, the gardens are now owned and operated by the Morris County Park Commission as public parkland.

The Trust matching grant helped fund the first phase of restoration of the gardens to their ca. 1944 appearance. Areas of the garden that were restored include: the Coffee Terrace, East Lawn, Orchard, and water areas.
