Georgian Court Bridge

Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Grant Award: $596,810 (1997)
Grant Recipient: County of Ocean
County: Ocean
Municipality: Lakewood Township

The Georgian Court estate, in Lakewood, is the work of noted architect Bruce Price, best known as the designer of Tuxedo Park in New York. Lakewood developed as a fashionable winter resort for the elite because of the ocean’s moderating effect on the weather and the perceived benefits of salt air. Reflecting the lifestyles of “the rich and famous” at the turn of the century, the former George Jay Gould estate is a National Historic Landmark.

The bridge carries a county road over an inlet leading from Lake Carasaljo to the “sunken garden and lagoon,” one of Georgian Court’s formal landscape features. The Trust grant helped fund Ocean County’s efforts to restore the bridge’s ornate masonry, which is embellished with terra-cotta piers, glazed brick detailing, and wrought iron railings.
