High Breeze Farm

New Jersey Historic Preservation Bond Program
Grant Award: $421,716 (1990)
Grant Recipient: New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry
County: Sussex
Municipality: Vernon Township

In continuous agricultural use from c.1810 to the present day, High Breeze Farm was never mechanized and, therefore, serves as a model of the agricultural life and practices of northwestern New Jersey from 1810-1935. The profitability of regional agriculture was enhanced by the embargo and naval blockades that constricted sea trade between 1807-1815. As this lifestyle disappeared in the early twentieth century when the railroads delivered less expensive goods from the Midwest, New Jersey farms specialized and mechanized their operations. High Breeze remained primarily a nineteenth century operation. Known as the Barrett Farm Historic Site, the property is part of the Wawayanda State Park.

The Trust grant funded needed stabilization of the main farmhouse and ancillary structures, including two barns, the tenant house, a corncrib, two chicken coops, the summer kitchen/wagon shed, and a privy.
