Grant Recipient: Hoboken Public Library

Designed by local Hoboken architect, Albert Beyer, the library was built in 1896 and the dome remains a prominent feature of Hoboken’s Church Square.  The building retains its classical stone and brick façade, ornate cornice, and terracotta urns, but the terracotta has cracks and chips and the building is in need of repointing.  Inside the original decorative ceilings, woodwork, and metal stairs remain.

The 2019 Trust grant helped fund the first phase of interior rehabilitation and installation of a new HVAC system.  Phase I interior rehabilitation is limited to the third floor of the library to serve as a new children’s library area, teen reading room, and processing room for staff.  Phases II and III will focus on rehabilitating the remaining library interior.

The 2018 Trust grant helped fund architectural design services for renovation and restoration, new HVAC and LEED certification. An earlier Trust grant assisted exterior repointing, repairing damaged masonry, metal brackets and cornices, and repairs to the entrance stairs.  The project also improves the circulation and book storage capacity in the interior.
