Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Historic Site Management Grant
Grant Award:
$50,000 (2005)
Grant Recipient:
Millville Army Air Field Museum

Constructed in 1941, Millville Army Air Field is considered the nation’s first “defense airport,” significant both for its contribution to the U.S. war effort as well as the development of air travel in the United States. The airfield provided advanced combat fighter training techniques to pilots. Hangar Number 8 is unusual due to its wood construction. Building 31 is a typical barracks building dating from the war era. Currently the buildings are underused.

The Trust grant will assist the preparation of a National Register district nomination for the remaining World War II buildings at the airfield as well as the preparation of a preservation plan and schematic designs for Hangar Number 8. The grant will also assist will the preparation of restoration plans for Building 31. This work will significantly advance preservation efforts at the airfield and provide for further interpretation of the site.
