Begun in 1825, the Morris Canal was completed from Philipsburg to Jersey City in 1836 and it remained in operation until 1924. The Morris Canal was the highest climbing canal constructed. The use of incline planes enabled the canal to reach these unprecedented heights, a feat not possible using the standard lock system alone. The Morris Canal played a crucial role in the industrial development of New Jersey. Incline Plane 9 West was built in the 1830s and redesigned in the 1850s.

The Trust grant will help fund the masonry restoration of the tailrace walls and entry.
