Nathan Cooper Grist Mill

Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund
Grant Award: $13,200 (2016)
Grant Recipient: Morris County Park Commission
County: Morris
Municipality: Chester Township

The Cooper Grist Mill is a partially restored and operating water-powered flour mill, constructed in 1826 by Nathan Cooper. The Morris County Park Commission acquired the property in 1963 from the estate of John Kean and began the initial rehabilitation in the 1970s. Open to the public since 1978, it is the only operating grist mill in New Jersey.

The Trust grant would help fund the rehabilitation of deteriorated sill beams that were noticed during a routine building inspection. When work is completed, the first floor demonstration area will be open again to the public.
