The Hackensack Water Works began in 1886 as a massive, state-of-the-art water treatment and distribution facility. It was expanded through 1912 and updated through 1955, to provide water to Northern New Jersey. The complex retains the equipment chronicling the engineering technology of water purification and is unique for the scale and architectural beauty of the complex. The complex closed in the 1980's and is currently vacant.
The 2009 Trust grant helped fund the preparation of a preservation plan that is guiding the stabilization of the water treatment building and pump house, as well as site and safety improvements, funded by two capital preservation matching grants in 2008 and 2010.
