Grant Award: $94,897(1992); $44,710 (1995) Grant Recipient: Lawnside Historical Society County: CamdenMunicipality: Lawnside Borough
The 1845 Peter Mott House is the oldest known house in the community of Lawnside, which was founded as a free African-American settlement. Local residents interested in the Borough's rich history united to prevent the house's demolition by a developer, who eventually donated the house to the newly formed Lawnside Historical Society.
A matching grant from the Trust in 1993 allowed the Historical Society to undertake structural repairs and a complete exterior restoration of the house. The 1995 grant funded structural repairs and a complete interior rehabilitation. The residential building is now interpreted as the nineteenth-century home of a prosperous, free African-American. The museum highlights the connections between the house, Lawnside, and the Underground Railroad.
