The 1902 lifesaving station was constructed on the site of the 1873 station, one of 9 Duluth stations designed by the same architect. Occupied by the Coast Guard until 1996, the structure was sold to the borough in 2000.

The 2017 grant helped help fund the final exterior restoration projects, including porch restoration and painting, and replacement of the tower windows with appropriate wood windows. The 2006 Trust capital grant helped fund interior rehabilitation, construction of a barrier-free entrance and facilities, installation of heating, ventilation and electrical equipment, and abatement of hazardous materials. The work was guided by a preservation plan prepared with support from a previous Trust grant. When completed, the structure will house municipal offices, as well as public meeting and exhibit space.
