Grant Recipient: St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Burlington

Municipality: Burlington City

Designated a National Historic Landmark, St. Mary’s church was designed by foremost Gothic Revival architect Richard Upjohn and built between 1846 and 1854. Additional features on the historic campus include the burial ground, first church, the parish house, lych gate and current rectory. While the church suffered extreme roof and interior damage during a 1976 fire, the brownstone walls were retained, and restoration was completed in 1981.

The most recent Trust grant will help fund a materials analysis to determine the best mortar and repair methods for repairing the discolored and spalling brownstone and a roof investigation to identify repair methods for the roof and drainage system. The construction will address a limited area of the church exterior that will be expanded as future funds are raised. The 2012 grant helped fund a preservation plan that set priorities for building repairs.
