Sunnyside Farm

Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Historic Site Management Grant
Grant Award: $11,985 (2010)
Grant Recipient: Mount Laurel Township
County: Burlington
Municipality: Mount Laurel Township

This 1838 farmhouse is a good example of a Federal period house that sits on 23 acres of protected farmland. It was constructed for Quaker Joseph Hooten on a homestead that may date to 1682. The house was expanded in 1876 by Elisha Roberts. Through the family, the house has a connection to five other historic houses in the region, including Paulsdale, the home of Alice Paul, which is less than a mile away. Sunnyside has a one-story 1970s addition in the rear, when stucco was added over the brick on the entire house.

The Trust grant helped fund a feasibility study to determine allowable uses for the property, estimate costs and revenues of identified uses, and propose construction scopes for recommended uses. The property's historic and environmental regulations will be addressed in the study.
